If you watched my episode on Dickson Azalea Park (Click the link above if you haven’t), you know that Orlando has more than its share of amazing parks. Today we’re going to explore the Harry P Leu Gardens – 50-acres of beautiful cultivated gardens with over 40 diverse plant collections from around the world, including a tropical rainforest, Florida’s largest formal rose garden and an amazing butterfly garden. Just minutes from downtown Orlando, the Leu Gardens is one of Florida’s most treasured.
The land upon which Leu Gardens occupies was once owned by Orlando’s Mizell family whose patriarch was Orange County Sheriff David W. Mizell who was gunned down in the line of duty – but that’s another show. In time the land became owned by Harry P. Leu and his wife, Mary Jane, who purchased the property in 1936. The Leus traveled extensively and brought back plants and seeds for their garden. In 1961, the Leus deeded the property which bears witness to the legacy Mary Jane and Harry left to the City of Orlando.
Of the nearly 50 acres devoted to Leu Gardens, 15 acres are listed on the National Register of Historic Places which contains 3 historic buildings including the Leu House Museum.
Leu Gardens has become a favorite location for weddings. This beautiful venue serves as a backdrop for celebrating new beginnings. The best place to say “I Do” in Central Florida!
Do not miss Leu Gardens the next time you visit Orlando.
